This song had another life.

Honestly...

It wasn't a very good one.

The arrangement was strong. The musicians sounded great. But the song itself never found its heartbeat. Every time I listened, I kept thinking, "There's something here..."

I just didn't know what.

Then my wife unknowingly wrote the hook.

Or at least the title.

One of her favorite expressions inside (and outside) our house is simply,

"You're better than that."

We've all needed to hear those words. Usually from someone who loves us enough to say them.

Suddenly, the entire song made sense. So, I wiped the blackboard clear and came up with a new melody and lyrics.

It became less about pointing fingers and more about looking in the mirror. Or, showing people the mirror. Or both.

As I watched people walking through life staring into little glowing rectangles, the lyrics practically wrote themselves.

Sometimes the best songs aren't written. They’re rewritten.
